Tres artistas indígenas amazónicos

Esta exposición presenta el trabajo de una generación clave de artistas indígenas amazónicos. Rember Yahuarcani, Harry Pinedo/Inin Metsa y Brus Rubio exploran las prácticas de construcción del lugar y los reclamos de pertenencia de las poblaciones indígenas amazónicas. A través de sus obras resaltan temas de políticas espaciales, relaciones ontológicas y ecológicas, migración, cosmopolitanismo y las actuales condiciones de vida de estas poblaciones, mientras retan visiones estrechas sobre el arte contemporáneo y el lugar. 

Rember Yahuarcani explora la mitología de su pueblo, los Uitoto-Aymenu, mostrando como la construcción del lugar está inserta en una red de relaciones con otros mundos y seres. Su trabajo cuestiona la noción occidental de lugar y alerta sobre la destrucción de estos mundos por el extractivismo capitalista. Harry Pinedo/Inin Metsa, del pueblo Shipibo, aborda los procesos de migración y las luchas para construir una comunidad indígena urbana levantado preguntas sobre la responsabilidad gubernamental, los derechos de vivienda y la provisión de servicios básicos comentando sobre el impacto de la pandemia. Finalmente, Brus Rubio, perteneciente a las naciones Bora y Uitoto-Murui, reflexiona sobre su biografía intercultural y su movilidad transnacional como artista. Su trabajo imagina un futuro de verdades ciudades interculturales como parte de un mundo cosmopolita en el que las poblaciones indígenas y sus conocimientos participen de forma igualitaria. Su trabajo permite visualizar un encuentro más justo de diferentes conocimientos.

Construyendo el lugar, construyendo el mundo es parte del Proyecto Amazonart, acreedor de una beca Marie Skłodowska-Curie de la Unión Europea y realizado en la Universidad de Essex. La muestra cuenta con la colaboración de Art Exchange y ha recibido el apoyo de la Embajada del Perú en Londres.   

Place-making, World-making: Three Amazonian Indigenous Artists

This exhibition features the work of a leading generation of Amazonian indigenous artists working today. Rember Yahuarcani, Brus Rubio and Harry Pinedo/Inin Metsa explore the practices of place-making and the claims of belonging of Amazonian indigenous people. Through their work, they highlight issues of spatial politics and ecological connections, migration, cosmopolitanism and their current dwelling conditions as they challenge static and narrow views of indigenous art.

Rember Yahuarcani explores the mythology of his people, the Uitoto, showing how place-making is embedded into a network of relations with other worlds and beings. His work questions Western notions of place, while alerting us to the destruction of these worlds through capitalist mining and extractivism. Brus Rubio from the Bora and Uitoto groups reflects upon his intercultural biography and transnational mobility as an artist. His work imagines a future of true intercultural cities as part of a cosmopolitan world in which indigenous people and their knowledge participate in equal ways. Finally, Harry Pinedo/Inin Metsa from the Shipibo people, highlights the process of migration and the battles in making urban indigenous communities – raising questions of government responsibility, housing rights and the provision of basic services with a focus on the current pandemic.

Place-making, World-making is guest-curated by Dr Giuliana Borea, as part of her Marie Curie Fellowship with the Department of Sociology, University of Essex, working in collaboration with the Centre of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Centre of Migration Studies at Essex.
